Oklahoma City Public Schools Superintendent Karl Springer and Oklahoma City School Board Chairwoman Angela Monson said Wednesday that while they are willing to work with the State Department of Education to address its low-performing schools, they will resist any attempt to take over the schools under the provisions of the No Child Left Behind waiver granted the state. Springer said leaders of the district realize that improvements need to be made, and reforms have been pursued over the past few years to address the schools’ performance. However, he said he is concerned that local decisions will be preempted by the provisions of the NCLB waiver, which allows the Department of Education or a vendor with which it contracts to take over the school under certain circumstances.
