OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - - Oklahoma's Senate president pro tempore says large cities should have the right to establish charter schools on their own. Sen. Glenn Coffee says the move will improve education in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Coffee unveiled the plan Friday at a legislative forum sponsored by The Associated Press.
The Republican from Oklahoma City said his plan would let mayors authorize charter schools. The bill he plans to introduce would apply only to cities with populations greater than 300,000. The plan would also let Native American tribes authorize charter schools. Coffee says charter schools improve academic achievement.
