Teachers unhappy: Standards rise, resources shrink

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma teachers say schools have been hit with a "double whammy" this year, with standards on state tests raised when additional resources for education weren't available. Last July, the state Board of Education voted to make it harder for students to achieve proficiency on the math and reading tests taken by all third- through eighth-graders.

On average, roughly 20 percent fewer students received proficient scores on the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test this school year because of the changes. This year, the test scores could affect whether a school makes progress as required by the state.
