OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Oklahoma House and Senate have convened a joint legislative session to honor Oklahoma's veterans. About 50 veterans crowded into the House gallery on Thursday as members of both legislative chambers honored the former military men and women for their service. There are an estimated 325,000 military veterans living in the state, and Oklahoma Veterans Council Chairman Pete Peterson says Oklahoma is one of the most "veteran friendly" states in the country.
Peterson says 13 of the 48 Senate members and 20 of the 101 House members in the Oklahoma Legislature are veterans. After the joint session, the House unanimously adopted a resolution honoring the late Frank Buckles, believed to be the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I before he died last month.
