The Daily Ardmoreite reported Saturday that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced that he had recommended to the White House that President Barack Obama nominate Gen. James D. Thurman to the post. Thurman currently commands the U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort McPherson, Ga. If he is approved by the U.S. Senate approval, he would succeed Army Gen. Walter "Skip" Sharp, who is set to retire. The commander of U.S. forces in the Republic of Korea supervises 28,500 troops in that country.
